men models Of my Hudson River Day Line models, this vessel I didn\'t have the opportunity build. However, the above painting was commissioned by the late George Kelly of New Jersey. Mr. Kelly worked on this steamer as a purser during the 1930s. He wanted a painting depicting DEWITT CLINTON approaching Indian Point Park with swimmers enjoying the summer Sunday afternoon. Indian Point was one of several port parks the Day Line serviced from Albany, New York to New York City. Several other steamboat paintings were produced in my Albany studio before I made a transition to colored pencil. I asked Mr. Kelly why he considered a painting from me when there were so many artists mainstreamig in the maritime. His reply became the formidable question, truth and answer. He said: \"Rex, honestly; do you know of any other black man in American Society \'today\' doing what you are doing in and for the maritime? You\'re the only and the first that I know of. Any smart Irishman, like myself, would bank on you. You\'re one-of-a-kind; an original.\"
